Two of the main cultural centers are:

"El Nigromante" where fine arts are taught such as painting, sculpture, photography, music, and others.

It is a branch of the well known Fine Arts Institute in Mexico City. The impressive building dates from the mid eighteenth century and was once the Convent of Conception. It is distinguished by a huge central tree-lined patio.

On a board you will find announcements with the events which will be presented in town such as conferences, concerts, exhibits, etc.

The other cultural center is the "Instituto Allende" which offers a diversity of courses such as jewelry, sculpture, languages, painting, among others. There, you will also find an amateur theater company called "The Players Workshop" which offers two theater seasons yearly.

There are many festivals that take place in San Miguel de Allende, such as the Music Chamber Festival, the Short Film Festival, Jazz Festival, Guitar Festival, etc.

Every October, the International Cervantino Festival is celebrated in the city of Guanajuato. This festival has become one of the most important cultural events in the country. Some of the events presented in Guanajuato for the festival are also presented in San Miguel de Allende allowing us the great opportunity to enjoy them as well.

We are very proud to have the largest bilingual library in Latin America.

The arts and handcrafts, part of our cultural abundance, reveal that the magical hands of artisans can transform any material into an impressive work of art. Pieces of art may be acquired all over San Miguel de Allende.

The city is also well known for its fine shopping. Boutiques and stores sell top quality art pieces as well as a wide variety of handcrafts from different regions of Mexico. It is definitely worth looking for metal objects, masks, trays, lanterns, frames and decorative items made of tin, copper, brass, bronze, and wrought iron designed by local silversmiths.

Other handcrafts produced locally are pottery, woven fabrics, sculptures, straw items, paper mache, loom textiles, wool rugs, and much more. Our colonial furniture is considered one of the finest produced in Mexico.
