San Miguel Arcangel Parish
Umarán esq. Cuna de Allende. Centro HistóricoThis is the most representative construction of this beautiful city. Its neoclassical interior dates from 1790 and its beautiful facade dating from 1880 was built by master mason Zeferino Gutierrez inspired by a photo of a European chatedral. The San Miguel Arcangel Parish has become an icon of San Miguel de Allende. It is simply impossible to pass unnoticed by locals and visitors.
Principal. Between San Francisco and Correo.The Main Square, better known as the Jardin, is the center of the city. The Jardin is surrounded by important buildings such as the San Miguel Arcangel Parish to the South, and what was the Town Council, at present the Municipal Presidency to the North. The main square is the enchanted “heart” of this town. With its well-kept benches and trees, it is the local’s favorite place for a stroll. It was remodeled during the Porfiriato epoch acquiring its eclectic French style with its unique kiosk. The Jardin is located one block from the hotel.
Av. Mesones, San Miguel de AllendeOriginally constructed in 1555, adjoining the Plaza de la Soledad (solitude Plaza), this square was the center for the peoples´s activities. It was the market and gathering area. It is at present dominated by the equestrian statue of Ignacio Allende. The large building located on the northeast corner of the plaza was the San Francisco de Sales School where Independence heroes Aldama, Umaran, and Allende attended.
Atotonilco, cieneguita, GuanajuatoThe Jesus Nazareno de Atotonilco Sanctuary is the only in its kind and it was added to the World Heritage list in 2008 by the UNESCO. It was built in 1748 by the priest Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro. It is only 15 minutes away from San Miguel de Allende. This sanctuary is very important for the following reasons: 1. It has been called the Mexican Sistine Chapel due to its murals on its walls, vaults, and doors which were painted by Miguel Antonio Martinez de Poca Sangre. 2. It was the place where the Virgin of Guadalupe banner was taken as the official symbol for the war of independence. Also, this is where Ignacio Allende married Maria de Luz Agustina de la Fuente y Vallejo on April 10th, 1802. 3. It is a very important center for spiritual retreats where thousands of people from all parts of Mexico gather and stay for retreats lasting over a week.
